How to clean a CSV before importing it

Imports into CRMs, shops, email tools and databases fail on the same few problems. This checklist avoids most of them.

The checklist

  1. Check the encoding and the delimiter in the summary line, and make sure the preview shows accents and columns correctly.
  2. Trim spaces so values match and do not create duplicate records.
  3. Remove empty rows, which many importers reject or turn into blank records.
  4. Remove duplicate rows, then remove columns that have no data.
  5. Download the CSV with the delimiter the destination expects, and import a small sample first.

Why imports fail

Importers are stricter than spreadsheets. A blank row, a duplicate or a stray space can create duplicate records, reject rows or shift columns, and the error message is often vague.

Questions

Can CSVFix validate dates or email addresses?

Not yet. It cleans structure and spacing, not the meaning of each value.

Does it change my original file?

No. CSVFix never modifies the original. It creates a new file to download.

Should I keep a backup?

Yes. Keep the original file and test the import with a few rows first.
