Remove non-breaking spaces from a CSV

Text copied from web pages often contains non-breaking spaces. They look like normal spaces but break lookups, matches and duplicate checks.

Open CSVFix

How to do it

  1. Drop your CSV file on CSVFix.
  2. Keep Trim spaces on. CSVFix turns non-breaking spaces into normal spaces and then trims the cells.
  3. Keep Collapse repeated spaces on to merge double spaces.
  4. Check the yellow cells in the preview, then download the result.

Why they cause problems

Excel’s TRIM function only removes the regular space character, so cells that contain non-breaking spaces still look different from clean ones. Two values that appear identical may not match because one has a hidden character.

Questions

Does it remove other invisible characters?

Not yet. Zero-width spaces and similar characters are not removed.

Why do two identical values not match?

One may contain a non-breaking space. Changed cells appear in yellow in the preview, and hovering shows the original.

Does it change spaces inside sentences?

Non-breaking spaces become normal spaces. Repeated spaces become one only if Collapse repeated spaces is on.
